Project Enigma: Ensuring Digital Dominance for the U.S. Space Force

The United States Space Force (USSF), the newest of the Armed Services, is tasked with securing the nation’s interests in, from and to space. Critical to that objective is the ability for USSF personnel to utilize a mission network that facilitates collaboration between government and industry partners. As technology has rapidly advanced, many of the legacy systems that the USSF inherited no longer meet this need. Additionally, the USSF currently requires a system to facilitate a multi-enclave digital and collaboration environment at a classified level.

That’s where the Enigma project comes in. Enigma will provide a cloud-based environment where both industry and DoD can collaborate on a shared network. Enigma is scalable and accessible to all Space Force engineering and acquisition missions and creates the ability to connect to anyone, anywhere, anytime at multiple security enclaves.

Today, GDIT is working collaboratively with Space Force on the Enigma effort. We are building the envisioned collaborative network, and we are onboarding and integrating services from contractors, vendors, and third-party applications at the Department of Defense’s Impact Level 6 (IL6).

To do it, we leveraged our expertise in digital engineering and Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC), which is the application of cybersecurity solutions for classified environments. Among other things, these capabilities allow users to connect remotely via a Secret Internet Protocol Router (SIPR) terminal from anywhere the mission requires it.

Given the need for this network to support classified information sharing, we leaned on our zero trust solution to deliver identity, credential, and access management (ICAM) to provide enhanced security and support dynamic data sharing decisions. We used automation for IT operations (AIOps) and software factory approaches to streamline and automate many network functions, enabling us to support the USSF while also driving both speed and consistency.

Additionally, we are standing up a knowledge-based service desk that is designed to scale and meet Space Force’s diverse enterprise IT Service Management (ITSM) needs. GDIT is leveraging its proven, robust, and collaborative approach to knowledge management with enhanced time-to-resolution driven by dedicated monitoring tools and intuitive automated workflows with a myriad of ITSM processes in place today. At its core, this Enigma solution is all about ease of use and exceptional user experience for the Space Force community.

At the start of our engagement, we built and deployed a prototype Enigma network architecture that enables cross-domain access among mission partners with different security level requirements. We demonstrated this capability ahead of schedule, which will allow the USSF to quickly move on to other elements of the program, such as the development of a fully scalable production architecture built from this prototype.

Targeted investments in key customer capabilities via our Digital Accelerator program have enabled GDIT to develop and deliver meaningful solutions for customers. Enigma is one such example.

Targeted investments in key customer capabilities via our Digital Accelerator program have enabled GDIT to develop and deliver meaningful solutions for customers. Enigma is one such example. Whether multi-cloud, software factory, AIOps, zero trust, or digital engineering, our Digital Accelerators are interoperable and complementary. For the USSF, we are leveraging expertise across our innovation portfolio to deploy an advanced technical solution that will connect stakeholders throughout the enterprise. The resulting system will drive efficient, effective, and secure information sharing, which is an essential part of the Combined Joint All Domain Command and Control (CJADC2) strategy.

We are exceptionally proud to work alongside USSF to deliver this important network and services, supporting the Space Force’s goal of ensuring digital dominance.
